Easter and Dogs: 5 Hidden Risks + A Safe Treat Recipe
Easter is a lovely time of year, but it does come with a few hidden risks for dogs that are easy to miss.
Here are the main ones to be aware of:
1. Chocolate
Even small amounts can be toxic, especially dark chocolate. Keep all Easter treats well out of reach.
2. Hot Cross Buns (Raisins)
Raisins are highly toxic to dogs and can affect the kidneys. Best avoided completely.
3. Spring Plants
Daffodils and tulips can cause digestive upset if chewed or eaten.
4. Garden Products
Fertilisers and treatments can irritate paws and the digestive system.
5. Sudden Increase in Activity
More walks and play can trigger stiffness, especially in dogs with underlying joint issues.
Carrot & Banana Easter Bites
A quick, gentle recipe you can make at home:
Ingredients:
1 ripe banana
1 small carrot (grated)
2–3 tbsp oat flour (or blended oats)
Method:
Mash the banana, mix in the carrot and oat flour until you get a soft dough.
Roll into small bite-sized balls or shape into little Easter treats.
Optional:
Chill in the fridge for a firmer texture, or lightly bake at low heat (160°C) for 10–12 minutes.
Enjoy!
Happy Easter
Easter doesn’t need to be restrictive, just a little more mindful.
With a few simple precautions and the right support, your dog can enjoy the season just as much as you do. If your dog is more active than usual this time of year, it’s always worth keeping an eye on how their body responds. Small changes early on often prevent bigger issues later.
