WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SHOPPING DOG FOOD

Shopping dog food can be confusing, especially when you want only the best for your dog’s health and wellbeing. I have made an easy guide for you to follow.

READ THE INGREDIENTS LIST

As with human food, we need to get into the habit of reading the ingredient list. Meat or fish should be the first ingredients (not meat meal or meat by-products). Protein should be the main ingredient, minimum 60%. The next ingredients on the list should include offal, ground up bones, fruit, vegetables and any added supplements that would round up the meal as complete

CHECK THE SOURCE OF INGREDIENTS

Some brands are transparent and will provide you the extra information, but some may not. If your purpose of feeding raw is for a healthier dog, feeding pasture raised cows and sheep, and wild fish would be your goal. Feeding meat that has been grain-fed doesn’t always digest well for most dogs. In negative cases, they might develop allergy or skin sensitivities. Understanding the origin of the meat would also give you a better understanding of the conditions the food is raised under. I always recommend supporting local farmers and its products, when possible.

KNOW THE BRAND YOU ARE BUYING FROM

Choose a reputed natural dog food brand which specialise in providing premium quality food for all breeds, ages, and sizes. It helps that they are backed by experts in the field and have worked with other pet food related professionals with a high integrity in the industry.

UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR DOG NEEDS

You know your dog better than anyone else, from his daily activity, behaviours and mood to his poop. If you have the basic knowledge of feeding the right nutrition for dogs, you’d understand what your dog needs or lacks in his diet, but don’t be afraid of getting expert guidance if you are unsure about it.
